YELLOWFISH CONSERVATION
Protecting our waters through conservation, education, research and sustainable fishing practices.
Protecting the Gold of Sterkfontein Dam
At Golden Drift Fly Fishing, we believe that the true value of fly fishing lies not only in the thrill of the catch, but in the responsibility we carry to protect what we love. The Sterkfontein yellowfish is one of South Africa’s most iconic freshwater species — a strong, wild, and beautiful fish that thrives in the crystal-clear waters of the dam. But this incredible fish faces growing pressure from environmental changes, overfishing, and Poaching.

That's why we've partnered with the Sterkfontein Yellowfish Conservation Group, a passionate collective of anglers and local supporters committed to preserving this unique fishery for future generations. Through ongoing education, habitat monitoring, and responsible fishing practices, we aim to reduce the impact on these waters and ensure a sustainable future.

We encourage all anglers to fish with care — handle fish gently and return them safely to the water. As conservationists, we take great pride in teaching these principles on every trip, helping our clients connect not just with the fish, but with the bigger picture of conservation.

Together, through knowledge and respect, we can protect the golden drift of Sterkfontein for generations to come.
Our Conservation Approach
As part of the Sterkfontein Yellowfish Conservation Group, we are actively involved in:

Monitoring spawning runs and reporting unusual activity

Educating anglers on safe catch-and-release practices

Promoting ethical guiding standards that limit fish handling

Advocating single fly setups, and proper fish revival

Organizing clean-up efforts along shorelines and trails
Fly Fishing with Purpose
When you book a trip with Golden Drift Fly Fishing, you’re directly supporting conservation. A portion of every trip goes back into monitoring efforts, shoreline clean-ups, and public education.

We believe that good fishing and good stewardship go hand-in-hand. If we want our children — and our clients’ children — to experience wild Yellowfish in these waters, the time to act is now.

Let’s keep Sterkfontein wild
