Understand your gear
Fly fishing is about finesse, not force — and your gear plays a big role in how successful and enjoyable your day on the water will be. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned fly flinger, understanding your setup can help you make smarter decisions on the dam.
Rod & Reel:
We typically use 5/ 7 weight rods at Sterkfontein, with a medium to fast action. These are strong enough to handle powerful yellowfish and deliver long, accurate casts, especially in windy conditions. Pair this with a good quality reel with a smooth drag — yellowfish are known to take you into your backing fast.
Fly Line:
A floating line is the go-to for most of the season, especially when sight fishing or using dry flies. — knowing how to mend and manage slack will make or break your presentation.
Leaders & Tippets:
A standard leader setup ranges from 9ft to 12ft, tapering down to 3X or 4X tippet depending on water clarity and fly size. Lighter tippets are better for delicate presentations, while thicker ones are ideal for stained water or heavier nymph rigs.
Flies:
Dry flies like hoppers and beetles (Doctors Beetle)are Sterkfontein staples, especially in summer. We also use nymphs, streamers, and terrestrials — depending on weather, water temps, and fish behavior. On a guided trip, we’ll match your flies to the conditions, and explain why we use each one.
